Ngày 17/12/1994, trong phiên họp lần thứ 18 của Hội đồng Di sản Thế giới thuộc UNESCO tổ chức tại Thái Lan, vịnh Hạ Long chính thức được công nhận là Di sản Thiên nhiên thế giới với giá trị ngoại hạng về mặt thẩm mĩ, theo tiêu chuẩn của Công ước quốc tế về bảo vệ tự nhiên và văn hóa thế giới. Ngày 2/12/2000, tại Hội nghị lần thứ 24 tại thành phố Cairns, Queensland, Úc, Hội đồng Di sản Thế giới đã công nhận vịnh Hạ Long là Di sản thế giới lần thứ 2 theo tiêu chuẩn về giá trị địa chất, địa mạo.

On December 17, 1994, in the 18th session of the Council in the UNESCO world heritage held in Thailand, Ha Long Bay was officially recognised as a world natural heritage value of aesthetic terms, according to the standards of the International Convention on the protection of the natural and cultural world. On December 2, 2000, at the 24th Conference in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, World Council recognized the HA Long Bay world heritage 2 standard about geology, geomorphology value.

On 02.12.2000, at the 24th Conference in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, the World Heritage Council has recognized Ha Long Bay World Heritage 2nd standard geological value geomorphology.
