VAN GAAL SUGGESTS SCHWEINSTEIGER COULD MAKE FIRST START AGAINST NEWCASTLELouis van Gaal has hinted Bastian Schweinsteiger could start his first match for Manchester United when Newcastle visit Old Trafford in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday. The German World Cup-winner has been used sparingly so far this season as he builds up his match fitness via a series of second-half cameo roles, coming on after 60 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, before entering the fray at half-time against Club Brugge in midweek.During his weekly interview with MUTV at the Aon Training Complex, van Gaal suggested the former Bayern Munich player could start against the Magpies. However, the boss also revealed Phil Jones will not feature due to illness and Marcos Rojo is still improving his own match sharpness."It’s still the same," van Gaal said, when asked to provide an injury update. "Only Jones is ill, but it’s getting better with him. He’s already running on the pitch. It’s not bad. Rojo needs match fitness, yes."Quizzed if Schweinsteiger is ready to start, the boss continued: "Yes, of course. It’s a matter of time. Maybe it shall happen tomorrow. You never know. I think he can still do better because when you are not fit enough then it is difficult to show your highest level. But I think it’s also a matter of time and we have seen a solution in rotating our [second] captain, Michael Carrick, with Schweinsteiger. I think it’s a very good solution because we can spare them both for the big moments."
