Phản ứng giữa SO2 và O2 đóng vai trò quan trọng trong sản xuất axit H2SO4. Từ phản ứng này SO3 được hình thành. Sau đó nó kết hợp với axit sunfuric đặc tạo thành oleum.
Phản ứng này là phản ứng 2 chiều và tỏa nhiệt. Nó bị ảnh hưởng bởi nhiệt độ, áp suất và chất xúc tác. Khi nhiệt độ giảm cân bằng sẽ chuyển dịch về phía tạo SO3 và ngược lại. Khi áp suất tăng thì cân bằng cũng chuyển dịch về phía tạo SO3.
Ngoài ra để tăng tốc độ phản ứng, V2O5 được sử dụng làm chất xúc tác
