신형 i3에는 삼성과 공동으로 개발한 새로운 배터리팩이 탑재된다. 기존 배터리는 60 시간당 암페어(Ah)에 22kWh 용량을 가졌지만 삼성 배터리는 94Ah에 33 kWh의 용량으로 50%가 확대됐다. 하지만 배터리 부피는 기존과 동일하다.



새로운 배터리 덕분에 i3의 유럽기준 주행가능거리는 300km 수준으로 향상됐다. 기존 배터리 대비 110km 증가한 이동거리다. 주행환경이 좋지 않아 에어컨이나 히터를 사용하더라도 200km 이상은 주행할 수 있다.

주행거리가 부족하다고 느낄 소비자를 위해 2기통 650cc 배기량의 발전기용 엔진을 탑재한 REX(Range EXtender) 모델을 선택할 수 있다. 6리터대에 머물던 연료탱크 용량도 9리터로 확대되면서 150km을 추가로 주행할 수 있게 됐다.
