Là tiết thứ năm trong "nhị thập tứ khí" và đã được người phương Ðông coi là một lễ tiết hàng năm. Tiết Thanh Minh đến sau ngày Lập Xuân 45 ngày. Theo nghĩa đen, thanh là khí trong, còn minh là sáng sủa. Khi tiết Xuân Phân qua, những cơn mưa bụi của trời xuân đã hết, bầu trời trở nên quang đãng, sáng sủa là sang tiết Thanh Minh (thường bắt đầu trong tháng ba hoặc muộn lắm là đầu tháng tư âm lịch tuỳ từng năm).
