Hiện nay, Hầu hết các Chi cục đã chuyển sang khai và nộp tờ khai theo hình thức hải quan điện tử.

1/ Luồng Xanh : Chấp nhận thông quan trên cơ sở thông tin khai hải quan điện tử, nên mọi người thường gọi màu của sự may mắn, có 2 trường hợp
(i) Xanh có điều kiện: chỉ cần xuống cảng lấy hàng
(ii) Xanh không điều kiện: phải xuất trình thêm những chứng từ bổ sung như: Giấy chứng nhật xuất xứ (C/O), Giấy kiểm tra chất lượng (ví dụ: kiểm dịch thực vật), giấy nộp thuế… Với loại luồng xanh này, chắc chắn bạn phải tới chi cục hải quan để làm thủ tục.

2/ Luồng vàng : HQ sẽ Kiểm tra chứng từ giấy thuộc hồ sơ hải quan trước khi thông quan hàng hóa

3/ Luồng đỏ : Kiểm tra chứng từ giấy thuộc hồ sơ hải quan và kiểm tra thực tế hàng hóa trước khi thông quan hàng hóa. Đây là mức độ kiểm tra cao nhất, phải làm nhiều thủ tục và tốn chi phí, thời gian, công sức nhất cho cả chủ hàng và hải quan.
Hải quan sẽ tiến hành kiểm hóa, có 2 hình thức kiểm hóa: Kiểm bằng máy soi (kiểm soi), và Kiểm thủ công. Có trường hợp, hải quan kiểm máy soi thấy nghi ngờ lại cho mở container kiểm thủ công.

Sau khi kiểm tra xong, cán bộ hải quan sẽ về Chi cục làm các thủ tục cần thiết: Biên bản kiểm hóa. Sau cùng sẽ làm thủ tục bóc tờ khai.
